About Golden Throne

GT is an adult oriented satirical webcomic about the wargaming hobby. It pokes fun at the players, staff and organisations that frequent this much maligned pastime.

GT originally concentrated much of the humour at the Games Workshop organisation and its staff, but recently has diverged a bit to cover other aspects of the hobby.

Although there are several recurring characters, none could be considered 'main characters' due to the constantly evolving and changing focus of the strip. However, there are four characters who are instantly recognisable as the most common of the recurring characters, and they are detailed below.

After a long hiatus, during which Dan, the originator and artist of the comic, became overburdened with real life commitments, the comic has returned to a regular update schedule thanks to the generous forum members and visitors to the site, who have donated their time and effort to creating new comics until Dan can devote more time to the site.

About the Characters

Dan
Dan is a wargaming afficionado whose love for the hobby led him to work for Games Workshop. Whilst there he encountered the wargaming fraternity in its prime hunting ground, and that had its effect on the poor lad. Eventually, bitter and cynical, he left GW to wander the countryside in search of his spirit guide... Oh, hang on. No, he left to mooch around and pretend to be looking for work elsewhere. Yeah, that's more like him.

Bald Guy
Bald Guy is the work colleague of Dan, and started working with him in Games Workshop, deciding to leave that establishment at the same time as Dan. His reasons for it were his own. Some people think even he doesn't know why he left. He might want to protect Dan. Either that or steal his shoes.

Emperor
AKA Old Skull-Face. The immortal god-emperor of mankind. Or is he? He might just be an crotchety old sod who was unlucky enough to get shoved in this Golden Throne thingy. What does it do? Well, it prolongs his life until...oh, sod it. Go look up his alter-ego's official history on the Games Workshop site. Emperor is his name.

Custodian
The long suffering guardian of the Emperor as he sits immobile (but not silent) in his Golden Throne. Technically, it should be "Custodians", since there are actually quit a few of them, taking turns to watch over the old git.

Interview with the Dan

Who are you, and tell us a little about yourself.
I'm Dan Jackson, I'm 24 (getting old), I'm from somewhere near Rainhill in Greater Manchester and I'm an I.T. consultant (lol).

What comics have you been involved with?
Ive done random comics for different sites now and then, like guest comics for people

Apart from GT I did a comic called Room 101 which was based on a few pot heads. It kinda sucked.

Why did you start GT?
Reason I started GT was cos on the old Room 101 comic, GW did something that pissed me off, so i did a comic about it for Room 101 (it was totally not related to the comic) and people seemed to like it.

I then kinda made GT a side comic, to do when I had time, but then it seemed to take over, and that's how GT was born.

What sort of stuff are you interested in?
Reading, RTS PC games and writing... I love writing... Never enough time in the day for it though.

Do you have any Room 101 stuff we can take a peek at?
People would probably have heart attacks if they saw any of them, to be honest...

What has drawing GT and Room 101 taught you?
Erm... art wise I learned that practice makes perfect, and that it's OK to use someone else's art as standard for your own. There are lots of small-minded, non-artistic people out there who see something similar to someone else's work and think you are copying, and to be frank, even if you are copying there's nothing wrong with that, since the person you're copying is copying someone else - that's just how art works. I get a lot of influence from Ian McConville from MacHall.

Lots of people have criticised my work for copying lots of other artists, some I've never even heard of!!

In regard to writing stuff, if it's meant to be a funny comic you're always going to have people who think you're hilarious and people who think you're about as funny as genital warts. There's no happy medium, and you can't please everyone all the time. The chances are that when writing a comic the joke you are doing has been done before, so someone down the line will accuse you of "copying".

Writing a funny comic is hard to do: it's a lot easier to write a comic with a story, but it's harder to get an audience for your work that way.

In short, you have to be thick skinned. You're gonna get abused more than you will get praised.

What made you want to start drawing in the first place?
Erm... nothing made me want to start drawing. I'm the kinda guy that draws all the time. I doodle, and that's kinda how a comic comes about.

Can you outline the process of creating a GT comic please?
Usually a GT comic starts off in the pub or something, with me and a mate talking about stuff, and after a while we get laughing and then I write it into comic form with panels et al. I then go home and draw the comic in pencil and then colour it in Photoshop

How long does it take to draw a comic?
Presuming I have a script already I'd say about 4-8 hours depending on how many panels.

And, perhaps touching on a sore note, how likely are you to be returning to the world of GT, or have you lost interest a bit since the shenanigans last year?
It's not really a case of lost interest. Right now I dont have a lot of time.

To be honest when I can start churning out comics again I will probably make them on a broader spectrum: not just about GW but about general "nerdy" stuff. The problem I had with GT is that theres no way to carry on doing stuff soley about GW cos they try to sue your ass.

I loved how it was all coming together but I don't have enough money to take on GW in the court room, especially over a drawing and the site needs to be able to make money for itself to sustain itself. It's quite a balancing act, to be honest.

How would you categorise GT as a comic?
Eurgh...a live journal with pictures! To be honest, it started off as a critique of GW but I think all webcomics eventually go down the live journal path cos any cartoonist bases his day to day writing or comic on his/her experience. Look at some of the biggest comics out there, Penny Arcade for example. Hell, from what I've heard they have even started recording their conversations, so its even more of a live journal.

Dan Jackson, thank you very much.
